NY到着、昼寝&公園
1月1日。 晴れ。 起床5時。 8時に家を出る。 南柏ー柏ー我孫子ー成田と乗り継いで 9時41分、成田空港第2ターミナルに着く。 はじめてのルートだが、案外早く着ける。 チェックイン、手荷物検査なども至って順調で、 10時半には搭乗ゲートに着いてしまう。 時間を持てあます。 12時、満員のJAL機は無事離陸。 機中では、映画をせっせと見る。 「日本じゃ、上映されないかも...」 ・"3：10 to Yuma"(ラッセル・クロウ) （DVDの題名「決断の３時１０分」） ・"The Nanny Diaries"(スカーレット・ヨハンセン) (上映予定なし） おっ、これは見損なったやつだ。 ・「象の背中」(役所広司) 11時間10分のフライトだったが、 映画をみていると、時間の経つのが早い。 一睡もしなかった。 10時10分(現地時間)、JFK空港に着く。 入国時のチェックの厳しいこと。 黒人の係員、怖い顔をしている。 左手の指紋、ついで右手の指紋押捺。 いずれも人差し指だが、 よく採取できないらしく、 グイと黒い指を押し付けてくる。 そして、顔写真。 メガネも外せ？ ようやくタクシー乗り場へ。 ニューヨークは、雨か。 黒人運転手、以前より態度はよくなっているが、 明らかに暖房しすぎだ。 車内の暑いこと暑いこと。 ここは、アフリカか。 コートを脱ぎ、上着を脱ぎ、シャツをはだけ... 11時半、娘のアパートに着く。 重い荷物を部屋まで運び上げる。
汗びっしょり。 つれあいが、土産物を取り出す。 すごい分量だ。 まるで運び屋だね。 一区切りつくと、猛烈に眠くなる。 昼寝しよう。 3時、長女が提案。 せっかくだから、外出しましょうよ。 ああ、いい天気になったな。 冷え冷えした街路を歩く。 気温は零下だろう。 街路には、すごいゴミの山。 大きなクリスマスツリーも放り出されている。 つくづく思うが、アメリカ人は資源を浪費しすぎだ。
NYの不動産価格の上昇も異常だ。 億ションなんていう生やさしいものじゃない。 この辺りだと、10億円の物件がザラとか。 アパートの家賃も値上がりしてるしね。 長女がぼやく。 まず、マジソン街を散策。 カフェ以外は、お休みだ。 5番街をわたって、セントラル・パークへ。 おお、走ってるな。 ロードレーサーを見ると微笑みが出てくる。 死ぬ前に一度、ここを走ってみたいな。
どこへ行くかと思ったら、湖へ。 JAQUELINE KENNEDY ONASSIS RESERVOIR
この大きな湖の周囲は、市民に大人気。 自転車、ジョギング、犬の散歩... セントラル・パークは、ニューヨークの宝だ。 高層ビルのど真ん中にある広大なオアシス。 暗くなってきた。 そろそろ帰りましょうか。 マジソン街85Stの"DEAN & DELUCA"をチェック。 日本にも出ていておなじみのグルメ・スーパーだ。 3番街81stでは、ZEBARS系列の"ELI'S"も覗く。
いづれも、住宅街の高級化にともない、 アッパーイーストに誕生したグルメ・スーパ−である。 値段ばかり高くてね。 長女がぼやく。 2番街81Stへ。 この辺で食べていく? 長旅の後だから、食事をつくるのは大変でしょ。 ああ、そうしよう。 汚い店構えのレストランに入る。
このお店のピザ、案外、美味しいのよ。 半信半疑だったが、どうしてどうして。 過去最高のうまさ。 この"TOTONNIOS"、ZAGARTの評価では、 ・FOOD 25点 ・DECOR 9点 ・SERVICE 14点 7時帰宅。 万歩計は、10095歩を記録していた。 すぐ寝る。
サーカス&昼寝
1月2日。 晴れ。 起床7時。 12時間寝た。 時々目がさめて、読書。 連城美彦 ｢黄昏のベルリン｣ 文春文庫 9時半ようやく、女性陣の支度が整い、出かける。 快晴だが、寒い! ビル風が吹きぬける。 パパは、例の店に行きたいんでしょう。 1st、77Stに向かう。 この"GREEN KICHEN"はお気に入り。 3年前にきたときは、改装中だった。 窓際の席に座り、常連気分を味わう。 数年ぶりにありつけた朝食メニュー、 昔と変わらず、ボリューム充分だった。 こういう普段着感覚のお店は、 ZAGARTには掲載されない。
バスと地下鉄を乗り継いで、ミッドタウンに出る。 長女が1週間使い放題のパスを買ってくれている。 ロッフェラーセンターへ行き、 名物のスケート・リンクやツリーをみる。
相変わらず、お上りさんが多い。 5番街へ出る。 数ブロック歩くと、公園に出る。 何という公園だね？ "BRYANT PARK"よ。 ここにも、スケート・リンクがある。 数年前にできたそうだ。
文豪・ゲーテの銅像もある。 また、数ブロック歩く。 NYにも100円ショップがあるのよ。 pennyを略して、"PEN SHOP"と呼んでいる。 だが、日本の100円ショップのほうがいい。 （ボールペンを買ったが、字が書けない！） 1時、マジソン・スクエア・ガーデンヘ。 ボクシングやバスケットボールの試合で有名だ。 なかに入るのは、はじめて。 ここでサーカスをみる。 CIRQUE DE SOLEIL。 フランス語で、太陽の絹。 カナダのケベックからきているサーカス。 2時開演。 場内は、家族客で満員だ。 演題は、"WINTUK"。 冬を迎えたのに雪がないのを残念がる少年が、 シャーマンの女性、臆病な男ウィンピー、 影だけの女性、雪犬と共に、 北の町ウィンタクを目指すというもの。 サーカスと言っても、 ピエロ、空中ブランコ、猛獣使いは、出てこない。 ま、何というか、冬季オリンピックの開会式のイベントだ。 道具立てが新しい。 MTBの曲乗り、スケートボード、 洗濯物の干してあるロープでの綱渡り、 バルーンでの新体操。 玉乗りが工事人夫の服装。 こいつは、ひねりすぎだ。 箱から人形が出てくる。 ぐにゃぐにゃ。 とても、人間とは思えない。 実は、関節外しの芸らしい。 雪犬がロックを踊る。 巨大なハリボテ怪人やツルも登場するが、 盛り上がらないままフィナーレへ。
なーんだと思っていたら、意外なことが。 紙吹雪が舞い出したのだ。 舞台の上だけだったのが、客席にも降ってくる。 それも、並の分量ではない。 多いところでは、子供が埋まるくらい。 観客は完全に魅了される。 ドンデン返しとはこのことだ。
4時、外へ。 寒いのなんの。 女性陣は、"Duane Reed"へ化粧品を探しに。 ここは、NY１のドラッグストア・チェーン。 小生は、スポーツ・オーソリティを探す。 見当たらず、BAGMANなる安売り店で時間をつぶす。 寒いこと、寒いこと。 5時、アッパー・ウエストの"ZABARS"へ。 ここの食材の品揃えは、群をぬいているし、 異様なほどの活気がある。
つれあいは、夢中になって品定め。 海の幸のマリネ、サーモン、チーズ、 コーヒー、パン、野菜などを買いこんでいる。 レジでグルメガイド誌"ZAGART"を買う。 なぜか、安い。 実は、"ZABARS"の広告満載版だった。 ワインは売っていないので、 近くのリカーショップで、ドイツワインを買う。 帰宅して、昼寝。 疲れと時差ボケのせいだ。 でも、強く思う。 昼寝するならマンハッタン。 人生のフイナーレ。 定年後まで、アクセク&アタフタすることはない。 女性陣は、シャワーに食事の支度。 9時になって、ZABARSの食材で夕食。 美味いものを口にすると、自然と会話がはずむ。 このサーモン、最高だなぁ。 チーズもおいしいわね。 それにしても、日本のチーズはまずいわね。 BGMは、フランス語チャネル。 一日中、フランス語が流れている。 グリーンカードを取得した長女の次なる野心は、 いつの日かフランスに滞在することらしい。
美術館&昼寝
1月3日。 晴れ。 起床5時半。 今日も12時間眠った。 夜中に何度も目覚めて、読書。 ・京極夏彦｢姑獲鳥の夏｣ 講談社文庫 これ使って。 長女がLEDの読書灯を貸してくれる。 便利なものがあるもんだ。 7時半、長女、出勤。 何か悪い気がする。 9時半、3人で外出。 今日は、特別寒いよと言われたので、 セーターとレッグ・ウォーマーを追加した。 それでも凍えるほどだ。 朝からスーパーへ行くのか？ 1st、79Stの"AGATHA"で、つれあいは夕食材料を買う。 次女はオイル・サーディンの缶づめを買い込んでいる。 家へ一旦戻るという2人と別れて、 2nd、81Stのスターバックスヘ。
マンハッタンにスタバは数々あれど、 ここの2Fは、PCをやるには最高なのだ。 ソファもあって、音楽を愉しんだり、昼寝するひとも。 今回、手のひらサイズのPCを持ってきた。 静かだから、日記を書ける。
11時、ノイエ・ギャラリー(Neue Galerie)へ。 5番街86Stにある。 クリムトの絵やデッサンを展示中だ。 5分ほど外で行列し、冷えた。 パスポートのコピーをみせたら、シニア料金10$ですんだ。 グスタフ・クリムト(1862-1918)といえば、 黄金背景の作品制作で知られている。 その代表作「アデレ・ブロック＝バウアーの肖像I」(1907)をみる。 ロナルド・ラウダーが1億3500万$の史上最高値で購入したもの。 クリムトのおびただしいデッサン、 それに数点の風景画もある。
12時、見終えて、マジソン街へ。 文房具屋とワイン・ショップに寄る。 ありゃ、レッカー車だ。 "DEAN & DELUCA"の買い物客だろうか。 レキシントン通りの"GALAXY20"に入る。 暖かいスープがうれしい。 韓国人の若者の経営らしい。 店内に自転車が飾ってある。 いいセンスだなぁ。
12時半、3rd-2nd 81Stで立ち止まる。 紅茶屋さんだ。 "ALICE'S TEA CUP"とある。
ZAGARTの評価が掲示されている。 ・FOOD 23点 入ってみるか。 紅茶とケーキを注文。 ケーキがだら甘く、もてあます。 となりのテーブルは、ママ2人と子供2人。 子供たちは、天使の翼を着ている。 お店のサービスらしい。 やがて、アフタヌーン・ティのスタンドが3台到着。 スコーン、サンドイッチ... おいおい、そんなに食うのかよ。 子供らも肥るぜ。 地下鉄の車内広告の文句を思い出す。 ・TO LIVE OR TO DIET ・STOP DIETTING, START LIVING 1時半、帰宅。 アパートは、全館暖房だ。 明るい日差しが差し込み、暖かい。 本を読んでいるうちに眠くなる。 贅沢な長い眠り。 6時頃、つれあいと次女が帰宅。 7時に長女が仕事から帰宅。 流石に疲労の色が濃い。 夕食は、サーディン丼。 ね、いけるでしょう。 次女は得意顔。 ロンドン留学中に考案したもの。 無性に日本食を食べたくなって、 缶詰のオイル・サーディンを買ってきて フライパンで焼いたら、旨かったとか。 買ってきたテーブルワインは、イマイチだった。 05年のカリフォルニア・ワイン(白)は、 ZAGARTの評価で29点なのに。 テーブルワインはダメか。
買い物&昼寝
1月4日。 晴れ。 起床5時。 夜中に目覚めて、読書。 ・京極夏彦｢姑獲鳥の夏｣講談社文庫 6時、クロワッサンとジュース。 8時、長女出勤。 ひさしぶりにNYで入浴する。 白い浴槽がアカだらけ。 （オヤジギャグ連発） 9時半、外出。 つれあいと次女は、NYフィルのコンンサート。 ローリン・マゼール指揮。 こちらは、"GREEN KICHEN"で朝食だ。 食べ過ぎと思いつつ、平らげる。 タクシーの運転手が車をとめて、店に入ってくる。 ジャン・ギャバンに似ている。 NYがモノクロのパリの街に変わる。 この低層のくすんだレンガの建物は、間もなく消える運命にある。 すぐ隣りまで、超高層コンドミアムが迫ってきている。
自転車屋、どこにあったかなあ。 アッパーイーストの一区画を歩く。 南北は、ヨーク・アベニュー、 1st、2nd、3rd、レキシントン大通りまで。 東西は、79Stから86Stまで 碁盤目のような街路をくまなく歩きまわる。 86tの大通りには、黒人が多い。 79Stの大通りは、住宅街なのに、 86tの大通りのほうは、繁華街だ。 ここにも開発の波が押しよせていて、 超高層コンドミアムが何軒も建設中だ。
おお、バーンズ・アンド・ノーブル (Barnes & Noble)がある! 全米最大の書店チェーンだ。 ペーパーバッグを買う。 ・TONNY HILLERMAN "THE SHAPE SHIFTER" HARPER 少し先には映画館もあった。 今度来ようっと。 上映作品と上映時間をメモる。 マンハッタンで映画を見るなんて素敵じゃないか。 11時50分、地下鉄に乗り、51Stで下車。 スポーツ・オーソリティは、3番街にあった。 なーんだ、売り場が狭いな。 これじゃ、新松戸店のほうが大きいぞ。 自転車用品もほとんどない。 シャツ、手袋など物色したが、そう安くもないし、 レジが行列中なので、買わずに出る。 駅へ戻る途中、"TAFU"に入る。 日本茶とスイーツのお店。 寿司だけでなく、お茶も流行か。 ほうじ茶と抹茶のフィナンシェを注文。 店員の娘たちは、NYへきて半年と3ケ月。 その張り切りがまぶしいほどだ。 昔の長女も、そうだった。 １時、地下鉄に乗って、 86Stのバーンズ・アンド・ノーブルに戻る。 今回は、文房具類をチェック。 へえ、読書灯を売っているんだ。 娘のは、NEC製の1灯式。 ここには、OWLの2灯式がある。 19.95$は高いが、2灯式のほうが明るいだろう。 迷ったが、買う。 店を出ると、女店員が追いかけてくる。 万引と間違えられたか。 だが、お金を返してくれる。 読書灯のお値段は、半額割引だった。 このお店は、新刊本でも割引するのだ。 さて、帰ろうか。 途中、"WINE EMPORIUM"で、ワインを買う。 2005年のカリフォルニア、sauvignon。 娘のアパートの前で立ち止まる。 まだ、陽が高いな、昼寝には早すぎる。 そうだ、写真を撮っておこう。 イーストリバーまで歩き、上流と下流方向を撮る。 大都会に川はつきものだが、 パリのセーヌ川のように河岸を風流にしてほしいものだ。
2時半帰宅。 ここまで9818歩だった。 早速、贅沢な長い眠りに入る。 4時半、つれあいと次女が帰宅。 シャワーの音がうるさい。 7時、次女がひとりで外出。 長女と出先で落ち合って、誰かと会食するらしい。 何かありあわせのもので、我慢する？ つれあいは戦意喪失。 ま、そんなこと言わないで。 8時、連れ立って外食に出る。 いろいろな店があるので、迷う。 娘と同じ名前の日本食屋もある。 結局、1st、81Stの"GRACIE MEWS DINER"に入る。 超高層ビルの１階にある。
アッパーイーストの住民で満員だ。 サーモンのスパゲテイを注文したが、 量が多くて食べ残した。 10時就床。 帰ってこないなぁ。 娘2人、深夜1時に無事帰宅。 うつらうつらしながら考える。 NYも安全になったもんだ。 ジリアーノ市長のおかげだな。 微罪でも犯罪の芽をどしどし摘んでくれた。 長女が言うには、 ＮＹは、いまは、全米で一番安全な街よ。 ほんとか？ ハーレムはどうなった？ 昔、110丁目に行ったとき、怖かったじゃないか。 パパ、いまは、130丁目までは大丈夫よ。 ほんとうかね？ 10年前、娘がひとり暮らしをはじめたときの あの胸が張り裂けるような心配はウソのようだ。
昼寝&「マンマ・ミーア!」
1月5日。 晴れ。 起床4時。 2灯式の読書灯は、やはり明るい。 7時に外出する。 いつものように出かけるが、 気がつくと万歩計を装着していない。 変だな、どこで落としたのだろう？ 脱ぐときに、バンドから脱落したのか？ でも、そんな鬱屈は、 イースト・リバーの朝焼けを前に霧消してしまう。 みんなに、この景色を見せたいものだ。
今朝も、GREEN KICHENで朝食。 昨日とおなじメニューだ。 ソーセージを1本残そうと思うのだが、 やはり食べてしまう。 お腹いっぱいになる。 こりゃ、肥るぞ。 腹こなしに多めに散歩するか。 今朝は、暖かい。 手袋も帽子も、いらない。 途中、DOG GIMを発見。 バスケットコートみたいなところに、 10頭ほどが走り回っている。 お犬さまだ。 犬の散歩の請負人もいる。 こんな商売もあるんだ。
8時、2nd、81Stのスタバに到着。 2Fには、もうPCをやっているひとがいる。 例によって、POCKET PCに日記を入力する。 9時、作業終了。 スタバを出て、また86Stへ。 バーンズ＆ノーブルで、ペーパーバッグを買う。 ・NICHOLAS SPARKS "AT First Sight" GRAND CENTRAL ここの2Fにもスタバが入店している。 混んでいるので、座らず。 9時50分、帰宅。 まだみんなは寝ている。 しょうがないな。 お腹が一杯でヒマだと、また眠くなる。 昼寝をする。 正確に言えば、朝寝か。 それも、変な言い方だが、ともかく眠る。 12時半、全員揃ってようやく外出。 1時半、ブロードウェイの50丁目 "WINTER GARDEN THEATER"に着く。 おお、「マンマ・ミーア!」の看板大きいなぁ。 客が長蛇の列をなして開演を待っている。 少し並んでみたが、凍えそう。
さっさとマックへ逃げ込む。 場所がいいのか混雑している。 2時になる。 いよいよミュージカルの幕開けだ。 舞台は、ギリシャの小島。 この島でドナはタベルナを経営している。 青い幕だけで、エーゲ海を象徴している。 簡素でモダーンなつくりだ。 娘のソフィー登場。 好感がもてる活発な女優さんだ。 "I have a dream"を歌う。 スカイとの結婚式を控えている。 このあと、2人のデュエット。
ママが女手ひとつで何不自由なく育ててくれたが、 バージン・ロードをともに歩いてくれる父親がいない。 唯一、それが心残り。 たまたま発見したママの日記、 そのさわりを女友達に読みきかせる。 3人で、大騒ぎし、笑いころげる。 若い娘って、箸が転げても笑うもんな。 日記には、シングル・マザーのドナには、 3人の交際相手がいたと記してある。 ママに内緒で、3人を招待しましょう。 さて、主役のドナが登場！ 娘の結婚を控えて、準備に追われている。 一区切りついてひとりになると、 越しかた行く末についての想いが溢れ出る。 ドナは、"Money、Money、Money"を歌う。 いつもお金に苦労してきたわ。 お金持ちの男をみつけて楽になりたい。 ♪I work all night, I work all day, to pay the bills I have to pay Ain't it sad And still there never seems to be a single penny left for me That's too bad In my dreams I have a plan If I got me a wealthy man I wouldn't have to work at all, I'd fool around and have a ball
そこへ、ターニャとロージーが到着する。 昔のバンド仲間。 気のおけない心を許せる女友達だ。 ターニャは、相変わらずスリムで、男に目がない。 ロージーはといえば、百貫デブになった。 昔のステージ衣装を身体にあてると、横幅は3倍以上ある。 このシーン、観客が腹を抱えて大笑いする。 ブロードウェイがうらやましいのは、 こうした笑いが舞台を盛り上げ、役者を元気づけるところだ。 (借りたオーディオ・デバイス、 日本語版の女性の声は、お通夜のようだった) そして、ついにパパ候補たちが登場。 冒険家、銀行マン、ギタリストの3人だ。 惜しむらくは、いずれも中肉中背で、見分けにくい。 元カレの出現に、驚愕するドナ。 題名になっている「マンマ・ミーア！」の出番だ。 "MAMMA MIA"の意味は、"まあ、なんて言うこと"。 実らなかった恋、別れた相手への恨み節だ。 ♪Ive been cheated by you since I dont know when. ♪Super trouper beams are gonna blind me But I won't feel blue Like I always do 'cause somewhere in the crowd there's you ブロードウェイの初演は、2001年。 これまで(2008/1現在)で、6年2ケ月続いている。 ロングラン・ランキングでは15位だが、 これだけ笑わせ泣かせてくれる傑作だから、 いずれベスト10入りするだろう。 （因みにベスト１は、オペラ座の怪人） 全曲ABBAの歌で構成されるので、 ジュークボックス・ミュージカルと呼ばれている。 歌のメドレーが主で、ストーリーは二の次かと思ったが、 どうしてどうして、きちんとした成長物語になっている。 それも、肝玉かあさんの成長物語というのがいい。 欧米には、素敵な諺がある。 "Life Begins At Forty" （本当の人生は40歳から始まる） せりふもウィットに富んでいる。 収穫は、ドナ役のCAROLEE CARMELLOさん。 トニー賞にノミネートされた実力派らしい。 歌よし、踊りよし、演技よし。 今年の夏に公開される映画では、 ドナ役は、アカデミー女優メリル・ストリープが演じる。 ちょっとクセがあり、線が細い印象を受ける。 映画の予告編 さて、この劇場、 収容人数は、わずか1000人。 規模の小さいのが魅力だ。 大劇場にない肌のふれあいがある。 急に訪米が決まったので、 長女が手に入れてくれた席は、1階右手18列。 69$のオーケストラ席。 かぶりつきなら、110$。 役者たちの表情もよくみえただろう。 二幕構成で、休憩15分。 2時の開演で、終ったのは4時半。 見終えた観客たちは、一様に笑みを浮かべている。 初詣の善男善女のようだ。 次女が珍しくほめる。 よかったわぁ、ありがとう。 思ったよりずっとコミカルだったわ。 そう、よかったわね、帰りはバスにしましょう。 長女の案内で、NYの夜景を堪能する。 マンハッタンの底力を感じる。 見方によっては、途方もない資源のムダ遣い。
つれあいは、カーネギーホールに感激している。 ヴァイオリオンのお稽古のせいだろう。 写真を撮りまくっていた。 長女が次に案内したのは、 ホテルPaker Meridianのロビー。 ここのハンバーガー、NY随一よ。 ロビーの片隅にある"burger joint"。 店内をのぞくと、まさに穴蔵だ。 薄暗くて、満席だ。 銀座の地下にあるバーみたいだ。 長女が並んで1ケだけ買う。 数ブロック歩いて、 5番街の最高のスポットに出る。 ブルガリ、バーグドルフ・グッドマン、 ルイヴィトン、テイファニーが向かいあう四辻。 その上には、大きなミラーボールが輝いている。 あれ、5番街の新名所よ。 トヨタが入居しているビルがそびえている。 このビルが建設されて入居したばかりの頃、 高層階の豪華なオフィスに案内されたことがある。 おお、絶景だ。 セントラルパークが眼下に広がっていた。 でも、あの頃のトヨタは中小企業に毛が生えたようなもの。 いつアメリカから追い出されるかビクビクしていた。 バス停は、ティファニーの前。 日本娘2人がケータイで、記念撮影をしあっている。 そうそう、ティファニーに感激したこともあったっけ。 あれは、いつのことだっただろうか。 はじめてNYを訪れたのは、1968年。 そうだ、もう40年も前になる。 ウォールドルフ・アストリア・ホテルに泊まった。 添乗員から厳しく夜の一人歩き禁止を警告された。 反抗して、友人と地下鉄に乗ってみた。 うす暗い車内には、黒人らの豹のような眼差し。 ウサギのように怯えて、たった１駅で下車した。 帰宅、6時。 長女は洗濯に出かける。 アパート棟にコインランドリーが付属しているのだ。 いいのか、手伝わなくても。 いいわよ、足手まといになるから。 そこで、また昼寝業に従事することに。 でも、次女は手伝いに行ったようだ。 女性3人のシャワーが終わると、もう9時。 流石に、みな疲れている。 こちらは高いびきの昼寝の後。 元気そのものだ。 テイクアウトのチキンとヌードルに、 キッチンでつくったアスパラといんげんを添える。 ごはんかパンか、お好きなほうをどうぞ。 ああ、それからさっきのハンバーガーよ。 4分割してある。 ありがとう！ 今日は素敵だったね。 ビールがうまいなぁ。
自転車専門店&昼寝
1月6日。 晴れ。 起床7時。 つれあいのシャワーの音で目がさめる。 7時半、GREEN KITCHENへ。 ウエイトレスがこないので、店を出る。 おっ、リスだ。 歩道を駆け抜け、街路樹をよじのぼり、 てっぺんの小枝から、反対側の街路樹に飛び移り、 幹の間に身をひそめている。 可愛いなぁ。 隠れたつもりだろうが、ちゃんと見えてるぞ。
気を取りなおして店にもどる。 ウエイトレスに文句を言うと、言い訳する。 サービス業には、往々にして、こうした性悪女がいる。 ソーセージやフルーツサラダを追加せず、 ジュースだけにする。 連動して、性悪女へのチップも減る。 お客を怒らせれば、収入が減る。 こんな簡単なことも分からないのだ。 8時半、一旦帰宅。 女性陣は、もう起きている。 "WOOD BERRY COMMONS"へお買い物ツアー、 張り切っている。 服装を見ても、気合が入っている。 迷ったが、パスさせてもらう。 買いたいものもないし、 自転車用品はアウトレットでは売っていないだろうし。 1日中、買い物につきあわされるのは、ご免だ。 この年になると我侭になる。 残り少ない日々、気ままに1日過ごしたい。 寝たいときに眠り、起きたいときに起きる。 行きたいところへ行き、会いたいひとにだけ会う。 行き過ぎた消費社会に振りまわされたくない。 9時半の女性陣の外出を見送って、 10時に家を出る。 3rd、79Stへ直行する。 降参して長女に場所を教えてもらった。 くまなく探したはずが、見落としていた。 こんなところにあったんだ。 自転車専門店"Bicycle Plus" 何年ぶりだろう。
お目当ての軽量ヘルメットはあったが、 イエローは、取り寄せ。 おお、キャノンデール・ショップだったのか。 にわかに購買意欲が沸いてくる。 長女に自転車を買ってあげたいところだが、 ぐっと我慢する。 タウリン号と同色のオレンジのウエアを買う。 113$。 前面は、雨風よけの繊維、 背面には3つのポケットのほかに、 ジッパーつきのポケットもある。 貴重品を入れておける。 防寒仕様の手袋も買う。 さらに、小冊子も買う。 ・CycleNYC NYのサイクリング事情がよく分かる。 店主サムの写真を撮る。 ナイスガイだ。
1時間ほどで退出。 散歩中に、自転車を盗まれない高等な技に出会う。 後輪を外してロックするのだ。 なるほど。
3rdの85StのGAPに入る。 安物の下着を買う。 着替えを鞄に入れるのを忘れた。 86Stに出て、バーンズ・アンド・ノーブルへ。 こんなものも出しているのか。 ・ZAGART "Movie Guide 2008" パラパラめくってみる。 1950本の映画が採点されている。 大胆だ。 たった3つの観点で評価するのだ。 例えば、名画｢カサブランカ｣は、こうなる。 ・総合 29点 ・演技 28点 ・ストーリー 28点 ・プロダクション 27点 はじめてカードで支払ってみる。 現金よりカードのほうが、店員の機嫌がいい。 腹減ったな。 隣り合うバーガーキングで昼食。 客層は、あきらかに本屋とちがう。 黒人警官が2人、メシを食いにきている。 ...なるほど。 違いがわかった。 昨日の"burger joint"のハンバーガーは、 肉がジューシーで、パンも旨かった。 こちらは、パサパサ。 まあ、安いから仕方がないか。 食べ残す。 12時20分から、映画をみる。 "ATONEMENT" 題名の意味もわからないし、 英語のせりふもあまりわからない。 だが、キーラ・ナイトレイの魅力を堪能した。 いい役者の表情や仕草は、万国共通語のようなものだ。
落ち着かないヤツだな。 前に座った男、上映中に4回も席を外した。 ポップコーンを食いちらしている。 座席のまわりに、ペーパータオルを撒き散らす。 映画を何と思っているのだ。 身なりや物腰は、ウォール街風。 自分だけ良ければいい。 あそこは、こうした性悪男の巣窟なのだろうか。 2時半、例によって81stのスタバへ。 満員だった。 そうか、今日は日曜日か。 POCKET PCへの入力作業をあきらめる。 3時15分に帰宅。 AGATHAで、ミネストローフ・スープ、フルーツカップを買う 女性陣はまだ帰っていない。 9時頃になると言ってたっけ。 安心して、昼寝する。 散歩の後の快よい疲れ、 そして、素敵な映画をみた後の眼の疲れ。 昼寝の条件が整っている。 7時半、女性陣が帰宅。 早かったね。 うん。 バテているご様子だ。 昼食もロクに食べずに、買い物三昧。 買い物なんて、それほど価値があるのか。 夕食は、9時から。 AGATHAで買ってきた食材を差し出す。 つれあいは、お土産に持ってきたカップラーメンを取り出す。 長女が指示する。 だめだめ、これを食べて。 マルちゃんのカップラーメンを棚から取り出す。 マルちゃんは、中華街で入手可能だが、 新商品は手に入らないらしい。
こんなものがうまいか？ ショッピングで体力を消耗すると、 こうした類の食い物のほうが美味いのだろうか。
映画&昼寝
1月7日。 曇りのち晴れ。 起床6時。 ｢姑獲鳥の夏｣を読み終え、ペーパーバックにとりかかる。 ・TONNY HILLERMAN "THE SHAPE SHIFTER" HARPER 7時外出。 足が自然とGREEN KITCHENへ向かうが、ストツプ。 今朝はちがう店へいこう。 アホなウエイトレスの顔など見たくない。 1st、81Stの"GRACIE MEWS DINER"へ。 ここも24時間営業だ。 早朝は、年寄りばかり。 どうして、こう無気力な老人が多いのか。 運動不足のせいだ。 年を取ったら、楽をしてはいけない。 自分のことを棚にあげてのアドバイスだが。 この店のウエイターは、ラティーノだ。 ヒスパニックと言ったほうがわかりやすいかも。 ワンエッグ、ポテト、ベーコン、オレンジ・ジュース、 コーヒー、パンを注文する。 4.85$は、GREEN KITCHENの半値だが、味はいまいち。 ここでも、窓際に座り、風俗を観察する。 通学時間帯らしい。 こどもたちがぞろぞろ歩いていく。 黄色のスクールバスが走る。 おお、イエローキャブが故障したようだ。 運転手がボンネットを開けて、立ち去る。 8時、81Stのスタバに出勤。 今朝は空いている。 POCKET PCへの入力作業がはかどる。 9時、一旦帰宅。 長女が張り切っている。 さあ、今日はサラベスで朝食よ。 予約を取ってくれたらしい。 10時15分、いざ、"SARABETH'S"へ。 ZAGARTの評価は、 ・FOOD 20点 ・DECOR 17点 ・SERVICE 17点 ローラ・アシュレイ風の内装がオシャレ。 アッパーウエストのヤッピーお気に入りとある。 あれ、どこへ行くんだ？ アッパーウエスト行きなら、ここで乗るのに。
長女が別のバスを追いかけていく。 3人も駆けて、次の停留所で飛び乗る。 「ラッシュアワー３」のロケみたいだ。 どうやら、ミッドタウンの店へいくようだ。 11時に到着。 予約時間に間にあってよかったわ。 サラベスは、いい場所にあった。 57St、5Ave-6Aveにあって、 かの有名なプラザ・ホテルの並びだ。 店の前のセントラル・パ−ク側では、 観光客相手の馬車がひまそうに客待ちをしている。
そういえば..ここを舞台に選んだのだ。 わが小説の最後のシーンを思い出した。 恋人の亜津子と馬車に乗って、 この5番街を駆けぬけていったのだ。 （注：HP掲載「月夜の来訪者」） 63才のときに書いた。 当時は、恋する力が残っていた。 いまは数えで70歳。 恋愛沙汰など忘却のかなただ。 話をもとに戻そう。 SARABETH'Sは、 ZAGARTのイメージとはちがうな。 実に上品で、リラックスできる。 板張りの床、白い壁、草花をあしらったモスグリーンの天井、 ローソクを何本も組み合わせたシャンデリア、 窓際におかれた大きめの花瓶。 そして、壁にかざってあるモノクロのスター写真は、 ヘップバーン、モンロー、ジェームス・ディーンetc。 この人気店、週末は行列のようだ。 となりは、家族連れ。 このお店、朝食で勝負していて、 何と午後3時半まで朝食を提供している。 みんな別々のを取って、シェアしましょうよ。 長女が仕切って、農場のオムレツやパンケーキなどを注文する。 さて、お味のほうは、まあ、ごく普通。 場所は、最高だし、雰囲気を楽しむ店だろう。 ジャムをつくるのが本業だから、レジでも売っている。 なぜか、つれあいは買わなかった。 これから、どこに行くの? アイススケートよ、パパもこない? やめとくよ。 年寄りは骨が脆くなっているから、 骨折でもしたら大変だ。 つれあいは、滑らないけど、ついていくと言う。 娘たちとの時間を何より大事にしている。 5番街をひとりぶらぶら。 きれいなビルだなぁ。 エンパイア・ステート・ビルだ。 中世では教会の尖塔は、神に近づく道だった。 この初期の高層ビルにも、気高さが残っている。 いまの高層ビルは、効率的で凡庸な日常。 確実にヒトは劣化している。
テイファニーに戻る。 バスに乗って、一旦帰宅。 女性陣は、また買い物に出かけるらしい。 次女いわく、 滞在期間が短いのよ。 わかってる？ 1時40分、86Stの映画館へ。 今日は、恋愛映画を見る。 ・P.S.I Love You
ヒラリー・スワンクの演技が光る。 狼みたいに歯をむくかと思えば、うぶなティ−ンズの仕草もみせる。 相手役は、｢オペラ座の怪人｣のジェラルド・バトラ−。 昨日の"ATONEMENT"もそうだが、 日本で公開されたら、もう一度見たい秀作だ。 4時、バーンズ&ノーブルに寄って、原作本を探す。 ないなあ、この前は沢山置いてあったのに。 ようやく1冊発見。 ・CECELIA AHERN "p.s. I Love You" HYDERION わずか26才の小娘のデビュー作が映画化！ まさに、アメリカン・ドリーム。 4時半帰宅。 汗びっしょり。 シャワーを浴びる。 雲ひとつない晴天、春のような陽気だった。 手袋も帽子もいらなかった。 レストランは、早速、戸外のテラス席を出していた。 2時間ほど昼寝する。 洋書は、いい睡眠誘発剤だ。 夕食は8時。 長女が、タイ料理の宅配を依頼したようだ。 食卓には、グリーン・カレー、鴨肉入りのサラダ、 そして、焼きそばが並んでいる。 女性陣は、運動後なので、ビールをグイグイ。 こちらは、白ワインをちびちび飲む。
映画&昼寝、そして寿司
1月8日。 曇りのち晴れ。 起床6時。 読書灯をつけ、 ZAGART"Movies"に目を通す。 ｢７人の侍」は、29点。 7時外出。 今朝は暖かい。 イースト・リバ−の朝焼け。 GREEN KICHENで朝食。 ソーセージの代わりに、ハム。 手のひらサイズだ。 今日のウエイトレスおばあちゃんは親切だった。 ライ麦のパンをすすめてくれた。 香ばしかった。 今日が最後か。 店の窓から風景を撮る。 自転車専用レーンの標識に気づく。 歩道寄りにはクルマの駐車帯があって、 専用レーンは、その右手に確保している。 うーむ、このほうが合理的なのかなぁ？
食後の散歩の途中、文房具屋へ。 手帳用のボールペンを2本買う。 変わったものがあると、つい手がのびる。 スタイラスがついていて、PDAの液晶画面をクリックする。 8時半、一旦帰宅。 長女に、今日の予定を聞く。 5時に｢がりのすし｣(SUSHI OF GARI)集合よ。 あたしたちは、お買い物。 夕食時間にしては早いね。 明日、早朝に出るからね。 えっ？ もう１日あるんじゃなかったのか。 勘違いしていた。 10時、外出し、スタバへ。 馴染みになった若いウエイターが会釈してくれる。 ダンス教師で、日本に何度も教えに行っているとか。 POCKET PCで入力作業。 11時、セブン・イレブンを発見。 店内のかなりのスペースをドリンクバーが占め、賑わう。 このアイディア、日本の繁華街のお店に使えるかも。
11時20分、マジソン・アベニューの文房具屋へ。 名詞サイズのリフィル用紙と旅行鞄につけるタグを買う。 12時半、5番街を歩いて、 71Sｔのフリック・コレクションへ。
マンハッタンには、美術館は数々あれど、 ここが一番好きな美術館だ。 あのフェルメールの絵が3点もある。 それが、部屋の隅や廊下にあるのだ。 ・Girl Interrupted at Her Music（中断されたレッスン） ・Mistress and Maid(婦人と召使) ・Officer and Laughing Girl(兵士と笑う娘）
ヴァン・ダイク、ターナー、ゴヤ、ベラスケス、ルノワール、 マネ、ゴヤ、ラトゥール... 彫刻・家具・陶磁器のコレクションもすごい。 いい趣味をもった富豪の邸宅に招かれた気分になる。 20分の紹介映画もあった。 鉄鋼業で財をなしたヘンリー・フリックの足跡をたどるもの。 入場料は、シニア10$。 日本語のオーディオ・ガイドもある。 無料といわれて驚く。 潤沢な遺産のおかげだ。 わが国の成金も見習ってほしいものだ。 腹減ったなあ。 時計をみると、午後1時。 5時にスシだから、控え目にしておこう。 「ペイヤ−ド」にでも行くか。 フランス人の店で、クロワッサンやケーキがうまい。 五番街ともお別れか。 何気ないものまでいとおしくなってくる。 そこで、違法駐車の摘発現場も撮る。 通りかかったラティーノが、にやり。 白人か、ざまあみろ。
新聞スタンドも撮る。 ははは、五番街のほうがボロっちいや。 長女のアパートの前のほうがモダーンだ。
1時半、レキシントンAv、73-74Stへ。 お目当てのペイヤードの店内に入るが、回れ右。 アッパーイーストのご婦人たちで満員だ。 昔は空いていたのになあ。 結局、スタバへ。 パンプキン・ローフとカフェ・ラテ。 この2Fは、滞在中の書斎代りだった。 POCKET PCに日記を入力してきた。 2時半、3番街に出る。 途中、もう１枚写真を撮る。 古い煉瓦がいい表情を見せている。 今度もし来られたとしても、 こうした古い建物は取り壊されているだろうなぁ。
ELI'Sの前に差し掛かる。 カリフォルニア・ワインでも、探すか。 SAUVIGNIONの白はありませんか? 2005年ものと2006年ものがある。 飲みくらべたら、面白かろう。 2本とも買って、長女へのお礼とする。 ZAGARTの評価では、26と27。 3時、帰宅。 荷物整理。 大したものは買っていない。 鞄は、目下、がらがら。 30分ほど昼寝する。 だが、流石にそうそう寝ているわけにはいかない。 4時に外出する。 5時まで最後の散歩をする。 スリフト・ショップ(古着屋)を覗く。 KENNETH COLEの肩かけ鞄を買う。 10$なら安いもんだ。 朝の文房具屋に行き、 同じスタイラスつきボールペンをもう1本買う。 5時少し前、｢がりのすし｣へ。 開店前のミーティング中だった。 5時きっかりに入店する。
すぐ長女が到着。 サッポロビールを頼む。 15分遅れで、つれあいと次女。 長女が仕切る。 この店は、おまかせに限るのよ。 ウエイターが、お一人様、75$くらいになりますと言う。 おまかせでいいな？ いいわよ。 やがて、すしが運ばれてくる。 平たいお皿に4×4、16ケ並んでいる。
お味はついていますから。 へぇ、醤油はないの。 ええ。 まず、大トロから。 口に運んでみる。 おー、なんという美味! こんなうまいトロは、生まれてはじめてだ。 スペイン産とか。 このお店、創作寿司で評判になった。 さて、お会計となる。 女性陣の期待の眼が集中する。 オレが払おう。 さて、お値段のほどは... テレビなら、ここで一旦CMになるが、 そんなイジワルはしない。 チップこみで、400$だった。 １人1万円なら、まあまあか。 ちなみにZAGARTの評価は、 ・FOOD 26点 ・DECOR 14点 ・SERVICE 20点。 6時半に帰宅。 女性陣は、シャワーと荷物整理。 ファッション・ショウまでやっている。 女っていうやつは... こちらは、手もち無沙汰もいいところ。 7時半に就床。
帰国
1月9日。 曇りのち晴れ。 起床4時。 部屋を片付ける。 朝食は、クロワッサンとジュース。 6時、長女に見送られて、タクシーに乗る。 たったの30分で、JFK空港に到着。 搭乗手続きは順調だったが、 手荷物検査で靴を脱がされた。 フードコートで、コーヒーとパン。 7時半には、もう搭乗ゲート。 霧だ。霧のなかにJALが駐機している。
